It's time we discover the strength and unity found through shared prayer with our families. Yeah, I know, I've heard it before. We barely talk with each other and now you're suggesting we pray together! Yes, I am. Look all around you! Our society is crumbling! We're losing grip on our moral compass. You Dad, you Mom have to incorporate a time and a space for your offspring to see you give honest and reverent thanks to our heavenly Father who sustains our necessities and essentials of life. Not just for food, shelter, and clothing although that's important. Not just for a job, finances, and a nice house or car. Give thanks for your family, for soundness of mind, for peace and for His protection. In case you're not aware, God fights battles for us every day, seen and unseen, that we have no idea is taking place and I'm happy to report, He has never lost a battle! Now that's worth praying for.
Here are my seeds of life to kick-start a healthy family life of prayer.
Family Prayer
Family prayer is a simple practice of gathering—daily or regularly—to speak with God together. It helps a household center on gratitude, seek guidance, and carry one another’s needs, creating a steady rhythm of unity and peace.
How to Start (Even If It Feels Awkward)
- Pick a consistent time (before school/work, at dinner, or before bed).
- Keep it short at first, 2 to 5 minutes is enough.
- Let different family members lead if they so choose. (adults, teens, and children).
- Use simple words; prayer does not have to sound “perfect.”
- Include these basics: Gratitude, confession, thanks, supplication, and blessing for others.
A Simple 4-Step Prayer Pattern
- Pause: Take a deep breath and become still for a moment.
- Gratitude: Each person names one thing they are thankful for.
- Needs: Share requests for the family, friends, community, and the world.
- Blessing: Ask for wisdom, protection, and love to guide your words and actions.
Sample Family Prayers
Morning: Lord, thank You for this new day. Give us strength to do what is right, patience with one another, and courage to be kind. Keep us safe and help us notice people who need encouragement. Amen.
Before Meals: God, thank You for this food and for the hands that provided it. Bless our conversation and help us be grateful and generous. Amen.
Evening: Father, thank You for the good we experienced today. Please forgive us where we fell short, heal what is hurt, and give us restful sleep. Help our home be a place of peace. Amen.
When Times Are Hard: God, we feel overwhelmed. Please give us wisdom for the next step and comfort for our hearts. Help us support each other with gentle words and steady love. Amen.
Tips for Consistency and Unity
- Keep a small list of ongoing requests (health, work, school, relationships) and update it weekly.
- If attention spans are short, add one sentence per person rather than long prayers.
- When conflict happens, include a brief moment of forgiveness: “Help us listen and make things right.”
- Celebrate answers to prayer—name them out loud to build gratitude.
- If your family includes people at different faith stages, focus on shared values (gratitude, help, blessing) while staying respectful.
When a family prays together, they often experience a deeper sense of connection and unity. Shared moments of prayer can foster mutual understanding, compassion, and support among family members. It provides a safe space to express gratitude, hopes, and concerns, strengthening the emotional bonds within the household.
Families who make prayer a regular practice may notice greater resilience during challenging times. Prayer can offer comfort, guidance, and a sense of peace, helping members navigate life's difficulties together. Over time, these shared spiritual experiences can encourage values such as forgiveness, patience, and kindness, contributing to a nurturing and harmonious home environment.
Ultimately, the act of praying together encourages open communication and reinforces a sense of belonging. It becomes a foundation upon which families build trust, faith, and lasting memories, leading to a stronger and more united family unit. If you've tried everything and everything has failed... try Jesus!
