How Do We Get Back to God?

Published on 22 March 2026 at 12:50

How do we get back to God? People ask this question in different ways, but it usually comes from the same place—a desire to feel close to God again, to feel forgiven, connected, and grounded. If our focus is collectively getting back to God, here's what 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, "if my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin, and heal their land."  However, let's ask this question from an individual point of view. Usually, this question is asked when we have exhausted all our human methods only to find ourselves trapped in the same situation. This question gets asked when we've shared our problems with everyone who we thought would listen, and no one has an answer, could care less, or has issues of their own. However, if you've reached the point where you've asked yourself this question, half the battle is over!

Here’s a simple, honest way to think about it:

How Do You Get Back to God? I'm glad you asked!

1. Start With Honesty

You don’t need perfect words or a perfect life to turn back to God. A simple, sincere prayer is enough:

“God, I want to come back. I feel far away, and I need You.”

Many faith traditions teach that God doesn’t expect perfection—just willingness.

2. Let Go of the Idea That You’ve ‘Gone Too Far’

Feeling distant from God is extremely common. But spiritually, the idea of “too far gone” is something people feel—not something God declares.

Most faith teachings emphasize:

  •  God welcomes people back immediately.
  •  The gap you feel can be bridged right now.
  •  Returning is more about direction than distance.

3. Reconnect Through Small, Daily Habits

Think small and consistent, not huge and overwhelming.

Here are a few ways people rebuild connection:

Prayer

Talk to God the way you’d talk to someone who cares about you.

Scripture or Devotional Reading

Even five minutes a day can re-center your mind.

Quiet Reflection

Sit in silence and ask:

  •  “What do I need to surrender?”
  •  “What am I grateful for?”
  •  “Where do I feel disconnected?”

Community

A church, a small group, or even one faith-minded friend can make a huge difference.

4. Deal With What Pulled You Away

Sometimes we drift due to:

  •  stress
  •  guilt
  •  disappointment
  •  loss
  •  feeling unworthy
  •  busyness
  •  hurt caused by others or by a church

You don’t have to fix everything all at once. Just naming it is a major step forward.

If you want, you can tell someone you trust what’s been making you feel far away—and maybe they can help you work through it.

5. Receive Grace Instead of Trying to Earn Your Way Back

A lot of people think they need to clean up their life before coming back to God.

But most spiritual teachings flip that: "For we are saved by grace through faith; and not that of yourselves; it is a gift of God."

You come as you are, and the healing happens after you come—not before. Grace is the unmerited favor of a loving God. Grace means we don't get what we really deserve, but God gives us what we really need! Look at Grace in this manner; G-God's; R-Reconciliation; A-At; C-Christ; E-Expense. Christ died...so that you and I could live.

6. Take One Step Today

You don’t need a dramatic moment. Just one step toward God is already a return.

That step might be:

  •  a prayer
  • a moment of honesty
  • reading something spiritual
  •  reconnecting with a community
  • or simply saying, “God, I’m here.”

If your cell phone didn't work, one of several things may have occurred; you failed to pay your bill; the network is down; your battery is dead, or you're in a dead zone with no signal reception. You want to get back to God? Pay your bill! How, speak to the Holy Spirit and let him know you want to reconnect effectively immediately. Reconnect your network by reading the Word of God. Read just a bit and then do it consistently to maintain your network. Recharge your battery everyday by spending a few moments in prayer. No, it doesn't have to be long and drawn out. Just share with God what's going on it your life today and then watch Him work for you. Lastly, some people can cancel your reception! They keep you in their zone which if they are not connected...it's a dead zone. Find some likeminded people who share things in common with you; the love of God being the center focus.

Listen, you’re not alone in asking this question—and you’re definitely not stuck. Jesus said in the B part of Matthew 28:20, "and lo, I'm with you always, even until the end of the world." Now, I don't know about you, but in this world in which we live, to read those words, is a real comfort. Just some seeds for thought.
